Following Jacob Applebaum's talk on Tor at the OpenWeb conference in Vancouver, I tried installing Tor on my MacBook Pro (MacOS X 10.5.7).
I downloaded the Tor/Vidalia (0.2.0.34 Stable) bundle for MacOS X, and everything installed without apparent problems. When I tried to launch Tor using the included Vidalia GUI, I found that the process would hang at the 'Connecting to Tor' stage. After way too much tweaking and troubleshooting, I ditched the bundled Tor and Privoxy, and installed the latest versions (0.2.0.34 and 3.0.10, respectively) using MacPorts. I had to tell Vidalia to use the new tor (installed at /opt/local/bin/tor), but following that, instantly, everything worked. Hmm.
Now that it's working, it seems pretty slick. Next project: install a relay on my server :)
