Mainz

I arrived in Mainz, Germany yesterday after a somewhat make-it-up-as-you-go-along voyage, which started with the airline with which I was supposedly booked for travel not having any record of my existence. After a few phone calls it was determined that my itinerary had changed, with me the last to find out, fortunately for a later flight. The new schedule made a mess of my train connections, booked via internet with the Deutsche Bahn, and left me in Stuttgart at 11:00pm with no hotel arranged.

Sigh. After some consultation with the ticket agent for British Airways, I discovered that I could not change my flight until I had departed, so I boarded for Heathrow and hoped for the best. Fortunately the plane was half empty and I had an entire row of seats to myself, so I stretched out and started popping melatonin, as recommended by my roommate, one per hour while in the air. I made it to three before passing out for four hours, coming to just over Iceland.

Getting an earlier flight to Frankfurt proved to be no problem after I expressed a willingness to pay, and this got me into Frankfurt around 6:30pm, where I was able to catch an S-bahn to Mainz at the airport, cost about 3.25 euro. Gad, European public transport is just so damn civilized. Had I been so inclined, I could have bought a beer to enjoy on the train, but I was happy enough just to be rolling on toward my destination.
